Samuel Philson, in partnership with J. S. Black, opened the banking house of Philson, Black and Company in 1869 at the same location of the present Citizens National Bank at the intersection of Center and Clay Streets in Meyersdale. In the early 1870's, the banking firm of Philson, Black and Company dissolved and the bank became the Citizens National. In 1901, two years before Samuel Philson died, the Citizens National Bank was incorporated as a national bank. In the 1880’s Citizens National Bank flourished, as did other Meyersdale businesses and industries, and, coupled with extensive mining, lumbering and farming, there was a need for a strong financial institution. Over the years, the Citizens National Bank has provided that need. Early in the 1900's, around the time of the bank's incorporation, expanded facilities were needed and it was then that a new building was decided upon. The result is the current four-story brick structure that occupies the same site as previously had been occupied by Philson, Black and Company. The following have served as Presidents of the Philson National Bank of Berlin and the Citizens National Bank of Meyersdale.
